– SINGAPORE
Backpacking has never looked so cool and comfortable. Opened in 2011, Wink Hostel is an upscale hostel in the heart of Singapore’s historic Chinatown.
Aimed at the growing market of “flashpackers” – tech-savvy backpackers with bigger budgets, willing to pay for more stylish accommodations – the hostel is innovative, ultra-modern and smartly designed down to the smallest detail.
THE ROOMS
Forget the days of rickety bunks and ratty sheets. Wink Hostel has nine dorms with “pod” style beds, what they describe as “private sleeping sanctums.” Each pod boasts sound-resistant walls, an orthopedic mattress, 260 thread count linens, soft duvets, reading lights, side-ledge, hooks and power socket for charging all your gizmos. The pods in the female dorms have vanities. Best of all, access to your dorm room is by smartcard and your assigned pod automatically illuminates when you enter. No more fumbling around in the dark to get to your bed or waking up the whole dorm by turning on the lights.
THE AMBIENCE
The sleeping pods are cozy and comfortable, giving you the luxury of privacy, while Wink’s communal spaces retain the friendly, social atmosphere of a traditional hostel.
THE AMENITIES
In addition to the usual backpackers inn amenities like kitchen and laundry (not surprising, these are slick), there’s an entertainment lounge with a flat-screen 3D TV, surround-sound system and DVD library. The ultra-clean shared bathrooms have rain showerheads. The mirrors are adorned with self-esteem boosting messages like “Hello Gorgeous!”
And it wouldn’t be a flashpacker hostel without free Internet connection faster than greased lightning. The Wi-Fi reaches the innermost corner of your pod. There are Internet stations and Wink also provides guests with tablets for use on the premises, free of charge.
