If you spend some time in Chiang Mai, you tend to develop strong opinions on everything: best fruit smoothie, best khao soy noodles, best vegetarian meal, best place for breakfast, best massage, worst place to wake up hungover with no recollection of how you got there (I’m told it’s out on the street in front of your ex-girlfriend’s apartment, bleeding from the head). I’m adding my opinion to the foray, sticking my neck out to declare the best fruit smoothie in Chiang Mai:
Tip’s Best Fresh Fruit Smoothies
Located inside Somphet fresh market in Chiang Mai’s old city, Tip’s has a cult following, and once travellers try her fruit smoothie, they’ll return every day for the duration of their trip. Behind heaps of mangoes, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, bananas, dragonfruit, oranges and watermelon, Tip will peel and cut the fruit to order, whipping up an enormous smoothie or a mixed fruit bowl for only 20-60 baht.
The fruit she uses is sensational: fresh, ripe, at the peak of their perfection. As I’ve gobbled my epic breakfast bowl (mixed fruit, homemade yoghurt, honey and muesli) with my fellow patrons, I’ve listened to them wax poetic, to the point of disbelief, at how perfect it all is.
Ok, enough groveling. Here are the details of how to find Tip’s Best Fresh Fruit Smoothies.
Best Fruit Smoothie in Chiang Mai
Somphet Market (Talat Somphet) is located on Moonmuang Soi 6, inside the moat.
Moonmuang is the road that borders the Thapae Gate side of the old city. Walk on Moonmuang north from Thapae Gate until you get to road 6 and there is a fresh market in the corner. Go INSIDE. Tip’s stand has a table and chairs. Enjoy!
